Week 2: Wimba

It was good to review the Copyright issue videos we watched last week.  I also took the Copyright quiz and found that I answered most of the questions correctly =).  I did watch the complete documentary of Good Copy/Bad Copy and was fascinated by the new remix culture’s creativeness.  I was surprised by how the Brazilian’ Cumbia Braga producers market and make their money.  This new way of business isn’t worried about Copyright laws, all they seem to worry about is spreading their music through big ‘Cumbia Braga’ parties and selling their music there.  If they would have asked the record companies for permission to use their songs, I’m sure they wouldn’t have afforded to use their music.  Therefore, I agree with the Sincere Manager Peter Jenner in Good Copy/Bad Copy that music and movie industries need to change their old business modals.

I liked the comment that professor Joe made; which was that the nature process of becoming an artist is to copy the masters.   But sadly we have criminalized that process.  Now it’s interesting to find out, but not surprising that it’s always a few people who hold the biggest piece of the pie and don’t what to change or share with the rest.  Greed as always is one of the biggest problems in society.
